The AKKA is an electronic mobility device which enables those with disabilities to explore the world around them. It sounds simple, however the effects can be quite profound. The AKKA is a mobile base electronically controlled and uses photo electric sensors to determine its course whilst following a predetermined route marked out with black floor tape. The tape can also be used as a perimeter fence, restricting the base to safe areas within a room.

Given the wide range of equipment used by children with disabilities, the AKKA has provision to secure standing frames, wheelchairs, custom seating, bean bags, many types of equipment that the child may already be familiar with, but now with the added dimension of independent mobility. For those with severe physical and mental disability the AKKA can be a key to unlocking the world around them, helping the user to interact with their environment, progress with development of spacial awareness as well as for some providing an introduction to power wheelchairs at an earlier age.

Through various controls designed to stimulate curiosity, the user is encouraged to make the association between their actions and the resulting motion they experience. To further encourage the user, the controls can be synchronised with an audio device which for example, may play music, train or car noises as the controls are activated.

As confidence develops so the user begins to open up to the possibilities this freedom brings whilst the observer is safe in the knowledge that the users movement is constrained to avoid collision or hazards. In the area of sensory development, rooms may be arranged to enable independent exploration of the environment.
