In light of a recent MHRA Field Safety Notice concerning a usage
restriction for a walker, Quest 88 wanted to clarify where the Kaye
Walker can be used.
Quest 88 takes its position as a leading supplier of therapy
products extremely seriously and while there are no restrictions on
using the Kaye Walker outdoors, felt the need to provide the
following information to avoid any confusion.
1) The standard Kaye Walker fixed direction front wheels, rear
wheels with single direction bearings and standard 'castor' style
swivel wheels are all suitable for
outdoor use provided surfaces are not muddy, uneven or stoney.
Should the wheels, specifi cally at the rear, become wet from
outside use it is strongly advised that a freeing agent such as
WD40 or GT85 be used to prevent the bearings from potential
seizing.
2) If the Kaye Walker is being used for family walks and general
leisure, including use on grass, stone or cinder paths, the fi
tting of activity wheels is strongly advised. The front activity
wheels are oversized to prevent the walker from coming to an abrupt
halt when negotiating small stones, whilst the rear activity wheels
have a mechanical ratchet system that can be hosed or washed down
if muddy.
3) Wheel treads and bearings on every walker will wear at
different rates according to the user's environment, age, weight,
behaviour, lifestyle and walking style. Therefore, it is important
to check for wear and make provision for replacement wheels as
necessary. These items can be ordered from Quest 88.
4) Please remember that children using Kaye Walkers should have
adequate supervision at a level relative to their individual
ability.
5) Kaye Walker wheel units or other Quest 88 walker accessories
must not be
used in conjunction with Kaye Walker clone products or any other
Class 1 medical
devices. To do so would breach Medical Devices guidelines and
Quest 88 is duty bound to report such activities and those
responsible to the MHRA. Kaye Walker wheel units are designed and
tested for use with Kaye Walkers only, in order to conform to
Medical Devices and British standards.
