Petra Running Bikes

The Race Running bike, Race Runner or the Petra are common names of the equipment used in the Race Running sport.  The Petra is also a mobility device for outdoor and recreational use. It rolls so freely and easily that despite their disability, users experience a totally new feeling of freedom when they use it.

Running on a Petra is a very effective way of improving overall fitness, muscle tone and strength, as well as benefits to the nervous and metabolic systems. Despite considerable physical challenges, most users are able to use the Petra for a long time as they improve their balance and motor reactions. On this website, you can view a short film of children and adults using the Running Bikes - this footage demonstrates an interesting contrast between the self propelled Running Bikes on the track and the abandoned power chairs at trackside.

Whilst running or walking with the Petra, the user gets to work their major muscle groups, particularly in the legs and lower back. It is also encourages the use of neck muscles.

The Petra can be used by children from 3-4 years through to adulthood. It is predominantly suitable for those with Cerebral Palsy, although it is also suitable for those with Muscular Dystrophy, Parkinsons Disease and other disabilities that affect mobility and balance.  The low centre of gravity and frame design offers good stability and poise whilst running or walking. The saddle unit counter-acts lateral sway and also can be used as a seat when resting.

A range of accessories provides extra support for hands, arms and body for those who require it. Accessories include PU body supports, fore-arm or wrist supports, leg/feet abductors and unicycle saddles to name but a few.
